|Over many decades, the Menton Lemon Festival® has filled visitors from all over the world, with joy in admiration at the shapes built entirely out of citrus fruits. |
The Lemon Festival, which didn't yet bear this name, started as a procession to entertain the rich tourists who spent their winter days in Menton's mild climate.
Indeed, it was in 1895, that the hoteliers and shop owners in the town of Menton suggested that the town council create a procession to liven up the town during the winter season.
In 1929, since Menton was the leading producer of lemons in France, a hotelier offered to organise an exhibition of flowers and citrus fruits in the gardens of the Hotel Riviera.
Following the success of the exhibition, the festival spread into the street over the years, with processions of magnificent floats decorated with oranges and lemons, lead by the charming ladies of Menton around the streets of the town.
In 1934, Seeing the opportunity to transform these processions, exhibitions and floats, into a typically local event, the town council decided to make the festival official by naming it the "Lemon Festival".
From 1936 onwards, the flower and citrus fruit exhibition took place in the Boviès gardens.
