History of Menton
|The Seigneury of Menton appeared in the 12 century. It then belonged to the Genoan family of Vento. In 1346, the Town of Menton became the property of Charles Grimaldi, Seigneur of Monaco.|
Since then, the history of Menton has been intertwined with that of the Principality.
Honoré II, one of the princes de Monaco, had his palace in rue Longue. He had the Bastion built (the current Musée Jean Cocteau) in 1619, in order to protect the town. In 1848, Menton seceded and proclaimed the town free under Sardinian protection. The town of Menton chose its unification with France in 1860 and Charles III of Monaco abandoned his rights over the town in favour of the Emperor Napoleon III.
Menton was then attached to the Alpes-Maritimes département.
From 1880, Menton took advantage of the tourist development of the French Riviera. The English doctor Henry Bennett built up an excellent reputation for the town.
Menton became a health resort appreciated by the English tourists and the Russian aristocracy. Palaces, hotels and luxury villas flourished. Illustrious guest come to stay on holiday: including crowned heads of Europe - Empress Eugenie, King Albert 1st of Belgium, Alexander of Russia, Queen Victorial of England.., as well as famous artists: the sculptor August Rodin, the composers Franz Listz and Charles Gounod, the writer Blasco Ibañez ..
It is to the geographer Elisée Reclus that Menton owes is title of the" Pearl of France "...
